Chase's Success Story

Patient with caregivers

"The most humbling experience.”
- Chase

At 23, Chase had his whole life in front of him.  He loved music and river rafting and was extremely close with his family. Within minutes, Chase's life took a drastic turn after a head-on collision.  He was admitted to a local hospital where he was stabilized and then transferred to Kindred Hospital Brea.

The accident left him with a traumatic brain injury, unstable fracture of the occipital condyle, fracture of the manubrium, pulmonary contusion, and other serious injuries. He required intubation and later underwent a tracheostomy for mechanical ventilation.

Initially admitted under restraints and receiving medical support for complications like dysphagia, Chase's journey to recovery was challenging. He needed assistance from two people to sit on the edge of the bed and had poor head control. However, through rigorous rehabilitation including physical, occupational, and speech therapy, his progress was remarkable.

By the time of his discharge, Chase had achieved significant milestones. He could walk over 1000 feet without assistance, navigate stairs independently, and perform activities of daily living with minimal support. His speech had returned to normal, and he could enjoy a regular diet once again. With his family by his side, Chase returned home, a testament to his resilience and the dedication of his healthcare team.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
