Wendy's Success Story

"We are so happy with her progress.”
- Wendy's son

Wendy was initially admitted to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center – Torrance with a severe headache and vomiting and was noted to be altered in mental status. She was found to have a multilobulated aneurysm and underwent a right eyebrow craniotomy and aneurysm clipping. She initially presented with a Hunt and Hess Score of 5, with a left internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection that was treated with stenting and a left frontal intracranial hemorrhage, for which she received a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt to address hydrocephalus.

Upon admission to Kindred Hospital Brea, she was trach to vent with a PEG tube and was unable to participate in the initial assessment. Our early mobility program with RNA was recommended. During her hospital stay, she received physical, occupational and speech therapy.

At the time of discharge, Wendy required moderate to maximum assistance for functional mobility and self-care tasks. This included walking 150 feet with a front-wheeled walker and performing upper body washing and dressing. Wendy was discharged to The Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago for continued intensive rehabilitation.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
