Renissa's Success Story
After undergoing brain surgery and facing serious complications, Renissa was admitted to Kindred Hospital for specialized care. With the support of her care team and participation in intensive therapy, she was weaned from the ventilator and was discharged home with home health.
Renissa was diagnosed with a brain neoplasm and underwent a resection of the left parietal and occipital lobes in addition to chemotherapy. After being found unresponsive at home, Renissa had an MRI which revealed concerns for tumor recurrence and potential hemorrhage. Given her condition, surgery was considered too risky. After receiving a PEG tube for nutritional support and a tracheostomy for breathing assistance, Renissa was admitted to Kindred Hospital.
At Kindred, Renissa’s care team worked with her to regain breathing independence. Renissa also participated in a neurorehabilitation program, which emphasized cognitive and motor skills. Physical therapy focused on improving her balance and endurance through targeted exercises, while occupational therapy worked on helping her regain the ability to perform daily tasks, such as dressing, grooming, and feeding herself. As Renissa progressed in her therapy sessions, she began to achieve greater independence. She practiced using assistive devices to facilitate her mobility and gradually increased her ability to complete self-care tasks with minimal assistance.
Her speech therapists and nutritionists also helped her regain the ability to swallow and eat food again, allowing for the removal of the PEG tube.
With dedication and hard work in therapy, Renissa made substantial strides in her recovery. She demonstrated improved balance, increased endurance, and greater self-sufficiency in accomplishing daily tasks. Ultimately, was discharged home with home health support to continue her recovery.
