Gary's Success Story
From Kindred Hospital San Antonio
Gary, an active individual who enjoys jogging around the neighborhood with his son, experienced a life-altering event. On an unfortunate day, he collapsed and became unresponsive while out for a jog. Bystanders immediately provided CPR until EMS arrived. Gary was quickly transferred to a local hospital in San Antonio and admitted to the ICU for further evaluation. It was determined that Gary had suffered an ischemic stroke.
After spending several weeks in the hospital to stabilize his condition and improve his overall well-being, it was decided that Gary would benefit from advanced medical care. Consequently, he was transferred to Kindred Hospital San Antonio for comprehensive rehabilitation, including physical and occupational therapy. Upon admission, the care team quickly crafted a personalized care plan based on his medical condition. Gary was highly motivated, with the primary goal of returning home to his family. At the time of his admission, Gary required total assistance with all activities of daily living (ADLs), including self-care, due to having been bed-bound for several weeks.
Gary’s physical therapy began with the use of parallel bars to help him practice walking and improve his balance and strength. This equipment provided crucial support as he progressed from using a walker to walking independently. Resistance bands were incorporated into his therapy to enhance his strength and flexibility, focusing on both his upper and lower body. A recumbent bike was introduced to build endurance and leg strength, which was essential for improving his walking ability. Therapeutic balls were used to strengthen Gary’s core and improve his stability, contributing to better balance and coordination. As Gary advanced, he used a gait trainer to practice walking patterns and gradually decrease his reliance on assistive devices.
Occupational therapy was equally important in helping Gary relearn and perform daily activities, such as dressing, grooming, and other self-care tasks. This therapy included adaptive techniques and tools designed to make these tasks easier and more efficient as he regained his independence. Through this comprehensive therapeutic intervention and his determination, Gary made significant strides in his recovery. His progress was remarkable, as he regained his ability to walk and perform daily activities independently. Gary was discharged home and the entire staff at Kindred wishes him all the success in his recovery.
Care for Complex Conditions
Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
