Tomas' Success Story
"Thank you to everyone at Kindred.”
- Tomas
Toma was initially admitted to an acute care hospital due to an electric scooter crash, where he sustained multiple injuries including a head injury, abdominal blunt trauma, cervical spine trauma requiring an aspen collar for three months, and clavicle/rib fractures. Due to his injuries, Toma underwent multiple procedures including surgeries, chest tubes, mechanical ventilation, IV sedation and multiple blood transfusions before he was transferred to Kindred Hospital Las Vegas Flamingo for wound care and continued ventilator weaning.
At admission, Toma was conscious but had difficulty expressing his needs and required sedation. During his stay, Toma was seen and treated by an interdisciplinary team including Neurology, Infectious Disease and Pulmonology. In addition, he was treated by the interdisciplinary clinical team of Nursing, Rehab Services, Respiratory Care, Nutrition and Infectious Disease Practitioners.
During his stay, Toma’s tracheostomy has been capped and he is currently on a low-level oxygen supplement. Initially, Toma was unable to participate in rehab therapy due to his condition, but now he is able to work with our therapy team and can ambulate 80 feet, is working on stairs and can participate in acts of daily living. He is also eating and drinking with mildly thickened liquids. When appropriate, Toma will be transferred to a skilled nursing facility to continue his recovery.
Care for Complex Conditions
Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
