Alejandro's Success Story
From Kindred Hospital Houston Medical Center
Alejandro loved spending time with his family and worked full-time in the construction business. However, during a day out at the golf course, he was accidentally run over by a golf cart. He was immediately rushed to the local hospital where his medical condition turned out to be more severe than expected. Alejandro required placement on a ventilator to support his breathing, having suffered 6 rib fractures and a left scapula fracture as confirmed by initial X-rays.
After several weeks at the local hospital in Houston, it was decided to transfer Alejandro to Kindred Hospital Houston Medical Center for ventilator weaning and extensive rehabilitation due to his need for prolonged medical care. Prior to admission, the interdisciplinary team developed a care plan focused on liberating Alejandro from the ventilator, which was crucial for his overall recovery. Upon admission, Alejandro was determined to return home to his family and children. He applied himself to the care plan, particularly focusing on the rigorous therapy program set by his pulmonologist, respiratory team, and physical therapist. Utilizing specialized breathing techniques, Alejandro strengthened his lung function and capacity. Within weeks, he successfully weaned off the ventilator.
Once liberated from the ventilator, Alejandro's motivation surged. Despite the lingering pain from his fractured ribs and skull, Alejandro made impressive strides in physical therapy. With guidance from his physical therapist and using advanced equipment such as resistance bands, pulleys, and therapeutic exercise machines, Alejandro gradually regained his strength and mobility. Through targeted exercises and rehabilitation protocols, Alejandro achieved the ability to ambulate independently. Starting from assisted walks and progressing to unassisted ambulation, he gained confidence in his ability to move around safely. His physical therapy sessions also focused on improving his ability to perform activities such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Simultaneously, Alejandro continued to excel in occupational therapy, refining his fine motor skills and practical tasks. With each session, he managed daily activities independently. Passing all goals set in his care plan, Alejandro discharged from Kindred and returned home. From the entire staff at Kindred, we wish him all the success in his recovery.
Care for Complex Conditions
Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
