Bettina's Success Story

Happy Patient standing in hospital halls after successful ventilator weaning

You are all wonderful people, and choosing Kindred made all the difference.

Bettina

Bettina, a 66-year-old woman with a complex medical history, was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a disorder causing serious muscle weakness. After a long hospital stay, she transferred at Kindred Hospital North Florida for continued care.

When she arrived at Kindred, Bettina was on a ventilator for breathing support and had a feeding tube in place. She was unable to care for herself or move on her own. With support from her medical team and unwavering determination, Bettina made steady progress. She was gradually weaned off the ventilator, and her diet advanced to include easy-to-chew foods and thickened liquids. She also began building strength through some physical and occupational therapy.

After a month of continued acute care, Bettina progressed to the Kindred North Florida Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) where she would focus on regaining her independence. Motivated to return home to her husband, Al, Bettina worked hard during her daily three-hour therapy sessions and within just a few days, she was walking 150 feet using a rolling walker.

In less than 2 weeks, a fully independent Bettina was discharged home, with staff from both the ARU and hospital cheering her on.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
