Shaunna's Success Story

Happy patient leaving hospital with caregivers

From Kindred Hospital Clear Lake

Shaunna was living an active life and working full-time when she suddenly experienced shortness of breath. Rushed to a local hospital in Houston, her condition rapidly worsened, requiring her to be placed on a ventilator to support her breathing. Despite the severity of her condition, Shaunna never lost hope for a full recovery. As her stay at the local hospital extended, the physicians decided that Shaunna needed specialized care for her respiratory issues and rehabilitation. She was transferred to Kindred Hospital Clear Lake, where a dedicated team would focus on ventilator weaning and comprehensive rehabilitation.

Upon admission, the care team at Kindred Hospital Clear Lake quickly crafted a personalized care plan tailored to Shaunna's medical condition. Diagnosed with respiratory issues secondary to a subarachnoid hemorrhage and post-shunt placement, Shaunna required a multidisciplinary approach to her recovery. The pulmonologist and respiratory team at Kindred immediately began addressing Shaunna's respiratory challenges. They implemented a ventilator weaning protocol specifically designed for her, closely monitoring her progress and making necessary adjustments. Shaunna's determination, coupled with the expertise of the respiratory team, led to significant improvements in her lung function. Gradually, her dependency on the ventilator decreased, and she eventually celebrated the milestone of being completely weaned off, breathing independently once again.

Physical therapy played a crucial role in Shaunna's rehabilitation. The physical therapists developed a program aimed at restoring her strength, mobility, and endurance. Starting with gentle exercises to rebuild her muscles weakened from prolonged bed rest, Occupational therapy was vital in helping Shaunna reclaim the skills necessary for daily living. The occupational therapists worked with her on activities such as dressing, grooming, and other personal care tasks. Due to her complex condition, Shaunna also required speech therapy. The speech therapists focused on improving her speech and swallowing functions, which had been affected by her prolonged intubation and medical condition.

Over the course of her stay, Shaunna made incredible progress and was able to regain her independence and was discharged to a lower-level care where she continues her rehabilitation. From the entire staff at Kindred, we wish her all the success in her recovery.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
