James' Success Story

Happy patient leaving hospital with caregivers

"I am so grateful for the staff at Kindred Hospital!”
- James

From Kindred Hospital Ocala

James, 55, went to the ER after experiencing shortness of breath and an altered mental status. James was found to be hypoxic, became unresponsive, and was intubated and eventually diagnosed with congestive heart failure and pneumonia. He was then admitted to the ICU. Due to airway complications, a trach and PEG tube were placed, and James was transferred to Kindred Hospital Ocala for his continuation of care.

Upon admission, James was dependent and required the total assistance of two people for all aspects of self-care and mobility. He was evaluated by our respiratory team consisting of physicians, pulmonologists, and respiratory therapists. The team initiated an aggressive weaning program and he was able to be weaned off the ventilator. Physical, occupational and speech therapy evaluated James and began addressing his functional deficits in mobility, self-care, speech, and swallowing. James was motivated and worked diligently in all his therapies and gradually began to improve his strength and mobility.

Currently, James is now able to complete his upper body activities of daily living (ADLs) while sitting with moderate assistance of one person. James is now speaking and able to communicate with staff and can eat regular meals with set-up assistance. Congratulations James! You are a true Kindred success!

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
