Manuel's Success Story
From Kindred Hospital San Antonio
Manuel was struck by a motor vehicle and laid unresponsive at the scene. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Manuel suffered multiple traumas, including a traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures. He was also placed on a ventilator to support his breathing, however eventually was able to wean from the ventilator. A medical decision was made to transfer him to Kindred Hospital San Antonio for extended medical care, including respiratory treatment, physical and occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
Prior to his admission to Kindred Hospital San Antonio, the interdisciplinary team studied Manuel’s medical condition and devised a care plan tailored to his needs, including participation in the traumatic brain injury program. Upon admission, Manuel required full assistance with all self-care and motor skills due to the extended period of time he was bed-bound. With hopes and goals to return home, Manuel applied himself to the care plan and participated in all activities set by his care team.
Manuel's physical therapy focused on improving his mobility. The physical therapists worked with him on exercises to regain strength, balance, and coordination. They implemented a variety of techniques, including passive range-of-motion exercises initially, progressing to active exercises as Manuel regained strength. The use of assistive devices, such as parallel bars and gait trainers, was instrumental in helping Manuel relearn how to walk and perform transfers safely. The occupational therapists concentrated on enhancing his ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) such as grooming, dressing, and feeding. They introduced adaptive strategies and tools to assist with self-care tasks and worked on improving fine motor skills through targeted exercises and activities. Manuel's therapy sessions often included tasks that simulated real-life scenarios to prepare him for a return to his home environment.
Manuel was part of the Brain Injury Rehab program and benefitted from the neurological focus of his therapy. Throughout his stay, he made significant progress in his motor skills and communication abilities with the help of his dedicated care team. By the end of his admission, Manuel could perform basic ADLs with assistance. Passing all goals set in his care plan, Manuel was discharged to a lower-level care to continue his recovery.
Care for Complex Conditions
Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
