Hiram's Success Story
"The loss of my legs will not change my everyday living and what I like to do or plan on doing.”
- Hiram
Hiram is an Army Veteran and a mechanic who has been working on cars for 48 years. He has a great support group that includes his brother George and best friend Bob.
Hiram is uncertain what caused his initial hospitalization. “I’m not sure,” he shares. “I knew I was sick and when I woke up, I was in the hospital, had lost both my legs, and they operated on my stomach.”
When Hiram arrived at Kindred Hospital Lima on February 20, 2024, he was on Bi-pap support, confused, and had an NG tube for nutrition.
Hiram is now able to be discharged from Kindred eating independently, is alert and oriented, and gets up with therapy and into his wheelchair. He even wheels around the halls himself.
Hiram shares that even though he has lost several close family members, including his children and wife, he will not let it keep him down and he won’t let the loss of his legs keep him down either. Hiram’s sickness has set him back a bit, but he is still planning on fixing up his brother’s truck that he started before he got sick.
Hiram remains optimistic and believes his recovery is a success story. “I may have lost my legs, but I’m still alive and can’t wait for what is in store for me next.”
Care for Complex Conditions
Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
