Amy H's Success Story
"Life is good enjoy every moment.”
- Amy
Amy, 39, visited the Community Hospital North ER after experiencing shortness of breath. While in the ER, she had progressive worsening hypoxia and dyspnea that required intubation. Admission x-rays showed low lung volumes with bilateral interstitial thickening. She was then admitted to ICU for management of acute chronic respiratory failure with hypoxia hypercarbia and concerns of pulmonary hypertension. Amy ultimately underwent a tracheostomy and after three weeks, was able to tolerate the trach collar during the day and trach capping with BiPAP at night. After completing a seven-day treatment of antibiotics, she was deemed medically stable and ready to be transferred to Kindred North Hospital.
Upon arriving at Kindred, Amy immediately began working hard with our rehab and respiratory teams. In a very short period, she was decannulated and advanced to regular foods. Her stoma was also completely closed, and she advanced to room air during the day and wearing a nasal cannula at night. With her determination, along with the encouragement from our staff, she is now ambulating independently and ready to be discharged home. Amy is so thankful for all the help that she has received from Kindred Hospital Indianapolis North and is so excited to go home.
Care for Complex Conditions
Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
