Salvador's Success Story

Happy patient with caregivers

"I am not finished until I say I am.”
- Salvador

Before his hospitalization, Salvador was deeply engaged in his community and profession, serving 13 years in elective office and working for 26 years as a commercial truck inspector for California's air resources. His family, including three daughters, a son, and four grandchildren, were central to his life. However, a diagnosis of valley fever and subsequent intubation just before Christmas drastically altered his life, leaving him and his family facing an uncertain future.

Salvador’s medical journey began at a local hospital before he was admitted to Kindred Hospital Brea in early February. He faced a multitude of medical challenges, including acute hypoxic respiratory failure, severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, metabolic encephalopathy, acute renal failure, anemia, peripheral eosinophilia, and septic shock.

Under the collaborative care of our interdisciplinary team, Salvador has made significant progress. He can now communicate his needs effectively, tolerate specific diet textures and liquids, and has improved mobility, achieving milestones such as walking 150 feet with assistance and transferring independently to a commode. Our staff also provided thorough family training and he was able to be discharged home.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
