Gilbert's Story of Recovery from Respiratory Failure

A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Aurora
Gilbert suffered a sudden respiratory arrest at home that led to cardiac arrest. Fortunately, he was resuscitated at CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital, where he was also intubated and placed on a ventilator, treated with IV antibiotics for pneumonia and other infections, and received a feeding tube.

After about three weeks in the ICU, Gilbert, still critically ill, was transferred to Kindred Hospital Aurora for specialized respiratory care. The Kindred team focused on weaning him from the ventilator, treating infections, managing his chronic lung conditions, controlling pain from rib fractures caused by CPR, and improving his strength. Over time, his infections improved, his mental status recovered, and he increased his tolerance for tube feedings. He progressed to using a trach collar during the day and only needed ventilator support at night. His overall condition stabilized, showing meaningful recovery after a life-threatening event, and after a 97-day stay, he was transferred to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility.
Now Gilbert is looking forward to returning to his community of close friends.
