Blanca's Success Story
From Kindred Hospital Sugar Land
Blanca was at home when she began experiencing severe breathing difficulties. Admitted to a local hospital in Houston, she was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure complicated by sepsis. The severity of her condition necessitated placing her on a ventilator to support her breathing. After several weeks in the hospital, the decision was made to transfer Blanca to Kindred Hospital Sugar Land for advanced medical care, including ventilator weaning, intensive rehabilitation, and antibiotic treatment to combat her sepsis.
Upon admission to Kindred, Blanca's care team quickly developed a strategic care plan tailored to her medical needs. The primary goals were to treat her sepsis and liberate her from the ventilator. Her admitting physician administered the appropriate antibiotics, and within just over eight days, Blanca was sepsis-free. With sepsis under control, the focus shifted to strengthening her lungs. Working closely with her pulmonologist and respiratory team, Blanca utilized specialized breathing techniques that enabled her to break free from the ventilator and breathe independently once again. This milestone filled Blanca with renewed motivation for a full recovery.
Initially, Blanca required total assistance for all activities of daily living (ADLs) and self-care. Recognizing her determination, her care team decided to place her on a restorative care program. Embracing this plan with a strong will to return home, Blanca dedicated over 180 hours to her rehabilitation over her eight-week stay at Kindred. She advanced from being unable to move independently to transferring from her bed to a chair, then to using a walker, and eventually standing and ambulating short distances with assistance. Her physical therapy sessions focused on rebuilding her strength and coordination, while occupational therapy helped her regain the ability to perform general self-care tasks she had once taken for granted. Additionally, Blanca's speech therapy sessions were crucial in restoring her ability to consume solid food and communicate effectively.
With success over success, Blanca achieved all the goals set in her care plan and was able to transition to Kindred’s Acute Rehab Unit for further rehabilitation to continue building her muscular endurance and strength. From the entire medical team at Kindred, we wish her all the success in her recovery.
Care for Complex Conditions
Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
