All 4 of Kindred Hospitals’ Subacute Units named to U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Nursing Homes”
Publication awards top rating to SAUs in Brea (CA), Greensboro (NC), Hollywood (FL), Louisville (KY)
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Dec. 1, 2023) – All four of the Subacute Units (SAUs) located within ScionHealth’s Kindred Hospitals have been recognized on the national list of Best Nursing Homes for 2024 by U.S. News and World Report.
Since 2009, U.S. News’ annual Best Nursing Homes ratings have assisted consumers in need of either short-term rehabilitation or long-term care for themselves or a family member.
The Subacute Units at Kindred Hospital Brea (California), Kindred Hospital Greensboro (North Carolina), Kindred Hospital Louisville (Kentucky) and Kindred Hospital South Florida – Hollywood each received a “5” out of “5” rating in the U.S. News evaluation while achieving a designation of “High Performing” in at least one of the categories of Short-Term Rehabilitation or Long-Term Care.
U.S. News gives the designation of Best Nursing Home only to those that satisfy U.S. News’ assessment of consistent performance in quality measures, according to the publication.
The Kindred Hospital Brea SAU was rated “High Performing” in both Short-Term Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care – one of only 72 nursing homes in California out of nearly 1,200 that were reviewed to earn the distinction in both categories.
The Greensboro SAU and Hollywood SAU were designated “High Performing” for Short-Term Rehabilitation. The Louisville SAU was designated “High Performing” in Long-Term Care.
The SAUs are located in Kindred Hospital buildings but operate separately from long-term acute care hospitals and serve their own patient/resident population.
“We are proud and excited to see all four Kindred Hospital Subacute Units recognized among U.S. News and World Report’s Best Nursing Homes,” said ScionHealth Senior Vice President for Specialty Hospitals Mark LaRoche, who oversees Kindred Hospitals’ SAUs. “Every day, our SAU teams hold themselves to an extremely high standard in providing excellent inpatient medical care and rehabilitation services to members of their communities in a safe, comfortable environment that provides a sense of home. The U.S. News honor is a testament to the skill and compassion of our local SAU caregivers and administrators.”
For the 2024 edition, U.S. News rated more than 15,000 nursing homes on patient and resident outcomes, such as infection rates; staffing levels; potentially inappropriate reliance on antipsychotic drugs; health inspection results and other indicators of quality.
“U.S. News’ Best Nursing Homes ratings give patients, senior residents, their families and caregivers an objective assessment of quality, to help them choose the facility that best fits their individual needs,” said Ben Harder, Chief of Health Analysis and Managing Editor at U.S. News. “Nursing homes that have earned the recognition of U.S. News have a track record of achieving better outcomes for patients and residents, and maximizing the amount of care they receive from nurses and other staff.”
To calculate the Best Nursing Homes ratings, U.S. News evaluated each nursing home’s performance using a variety of quality measures obtained from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The U.S. News methodology factors data such as resident care, safety and outcomes. Both short- and long-term ratings include data on nurse staffing, use of antipsychotic drugs and success in preventing ER and hospital visits. The long-term care rating also includes measures of whether a home changed ownership and how well they were staffed on weekends.
“Kindred Hospitals’ SAUs are an important resource for individuals in Southern California, Greater Greensboro, Greater Louisville and South Florida who may be experiencing an illness, injury or worsening disease that is serious enough to require inpatient care and rehabilitation for a considerable period but that does not require the full level of medical attention provided in a hospital,” said Kim Gibbs, ScionHealth District Director of Operations for SAUs. “Our SAU caregivers are specially trained to aid in the recovery and care of these patients and residents, and their care and rehabilitation are bolstered by the on-site services of our specialty hospitals. The honor by U.S. News demonstrates the high quality of care that our SAUs provide.”
