Victor's Success Story

Patient sitting

From Kindred Hospital Houston Northwest

Victor was admitted to Kindred Hospital Northwest for extended medical care to battle sepsis, pneumonia, empyema, and respiratory issues related to COPD. Prior to his admission, the interdisciplinary team crafted a comprehensive care plan based on Victor's medical condition, with the primary goals of curing his sepsis and pneumonia and addressing his respiratory issues.

Upon admission, Victor was alert but reliant on a ventilator. The team quickly sprang into action. His admitting physician promptly administered a regimen of antibiotics to combat the sepsis and any persisting pneumonia. This aggressive antibiotic treatment was crucial in controlling and eventually eliminating the infections. Over the course of his stay, and after numerous rounds of antibiotics, Victor was soon free of sepsis and pneumonia, marking a significant milestone in his recovery. In addition to medical treatments, Victor's care plan included pulmonary therapy to improve his lung function and help manage his COPD. The pulmonary therapy team worked with Victor daily, utilizing breathing exercises, chest physiotherapy, and other techniques to enhance his respiratory capacity and reduce his dependence on the ventilator.

Physical therapy was another vital component of Victor's recovery. The physical therapists designed a personalized exercise program to help him regain strength, mobility, and endurance. Despite the initial challenges, Victor's determination and the therapists' encouragement led to steady progress. Gradually, he was able to sit up, stand, and eventually take steps with assistance. Victor also engaged in occupational therapy. The occupational therapists focused on helping him regain the skills needed for daily living activities. They worked on improving his fine motor skills, coordination, and overall independence. Through adaptive techniques and supportive equipment, Victor learned to manage tasks such as dressing, grooming, and eating, which significantly boosted his confidence and quality of life.

Over the course of his admission, Victor passed all the goals set in his care plan. By the time he was ready for discharge, Victor had not only overcome sepsis and pneumonia but had also made significant strides in managing his respiratory condition and regaining his physical and occupational abilities. From the entire staff at Kindred, we wish him all the success in his recovery.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
