Toya R's Success Story

Happy patient leaving hospital with caregivers

"My husband, son and entire family were told I probably wasn’t going to make it and to prepare for the worst. Well after going through all of that, I’m still here!”
- Toya

When Toya came to Kindred Hospital First Hill Seattle, she had a sacral decubitus ulcer and was in septic shock with acute renal failure and had coded. The Kindred team sprang into action and were able to successfully resuscitate her.

Throughout her stay at Kindred, Toya was successfully weaned from the ventilator, taking in food and protecting her own airway. With careful selection of antibiotics Toya’s infection cleared.

Toya was also admitted with a very large, stage 4 sacral wound with exposed bone and was mostly covered in dead tissue. Her wound healing had been previously stalled due to recurrent ICU stays and poor health conditions. Despite her challenging state of health, we were able to keep the wound from getting infected or worse throughout her stay.

After a few debridement procedures, our wound team placed a wound vac on Toya for only four weeks, whereby the wound measurements became too shallow and small for wound vac therapy. Now, she is on regular dressing changes and her wound is surface level with the skin.

Toya is looking forward to the next step in her healthcare journey of healing.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
