Richard's Success Story
"This must be some kind of a record for recovery!”
- Vincent, Director of Respiratory Therapy
Richard was admitted to Kindred Hospital Westminster on life support (ventilator) and a tracheostomy tube. He required maximal assistance from two people to roll and sit up; was unable to stand; was dependent in all aspects of activities of daily living and was unable to talk and eat.
With the help of our nursing staff, and physical and respiratory therapy teams, along with the support of his family, Richard successfully weaned off the ventilator in less than 14 days. A few days later, his tracheostomy was removed. He also made very good functional gains in less than three weeks.
At discharge, he was able to walk 50 feet with the walker and contact guard assistance; was able to actively participate in doing self-care activities such as dressing, toilet transfer, oral hygiene with some assistance and was talking and cleared for modified texture diet to eat by mouth. Richard’s overall progression at Kindred Hospital Westminster qualified him to be transferred to an acute rehab hospital where he will receive intensive rehab.
Care for Complex Conditions
Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
