Mark's Success Story

Happy patient leaving hospital with caregivers

From Kindred Hospital Tarrant County - Fort Worth Southwest

Mark was admitted to Kindred Hospital Tarrant County Fort Worth Southwest after being discharged from a local hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. He required extended medical care and ventilator weaning due to his ongoing battle with COPD, chronic respiratory failure with hypoxia, and a severe case of pneumonia. The interdisciplinary team quickly crafted a comprehensive care plan tailored to his needs, incorporating IV antibiotics, respiratory therapy, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapy sessions.

Mark's pneumonia presented a significant challenge, exacerbating his respiratory issues and complicating his recovery. The medical team prioritized aggressive treatment of the pneumonia with targeted IV antibiotics, close monitoring, and supportive care. Through diligent medical management and Mark's determination, the infection was brought under control, significantly improving his respiratory status. Initially, Mark was dependent on a ventilator to support his breathing. The respiratory therapy team played a crucial role in his recovery, working with him daily to improve his lung function. They implemented specialized breathing techniques and gradually reduced his dependence on the ventilator. With persistent effort and expert guidance, Mark was successfully liberated from the ventilator, marking a significant milestone in his recovery.

Upon admission, Mark needed total assistance with all transfers and self-care activities of daily living (ADLs), and he received nutrition through a PEG tube. The physical therapy team focused on enhancing his mobility and strength. Through a rigorous regimen of exercises and techniques, Mark progressed from full assistance to independently transferring and walking over 300 feet using a rolling walker. The occupational therapy team was instrumental in restoring Mark's ability to perform ADLs independently. They provided personalized sessions that targeted skills such as dressing, bathing, and grooming, enabling Mark to manage these tasks on his own. Mark's speech therapy sessions addressed his initial swallowing difficulties. The therapist employed targeted exercises and strategies that improved his swallowing function, leading to the removal of the PEG tube and a transition to a general diet.

With success over success and passing all goals set in his care plan, Mark was deemed suitable for discharge and was discharged home. From the entire staff at Kindred, we wish him all the success in his recovery.
