From Kindred Hospital Houston Northwest

Mark was discharged from a local hospital in Houston, TX, after enduring a series of severe medical complications, including hypoxic respiratory failure, gas gangrene of the left foot, and osteomyelitis. These conditions necessitated amputation of his lower extremity. Once he was stable, Mark was transferred to Kindred Hospital Houston Northwest to undergo a comprehensive rehabilitation program, which included physical therapy, occupational therapy, and IV antibiotic treatment. Additionally, ventilator weaning due to his severe respiratory complications.

Upon his admission to Kindred, an interdisciplinary team crafted a personalized care plan tailored to Mark's medical condition. The primary goal was to administer IV antibiotics to treat any lingering infections, complemented by extensive rehabilitation. Mark arrived at Kindred on a ventilator. The dedicated care team worked tirelessly to improve his lung function and overall health, gradually liberating him from the ventilator. This significant achievement marked a crucial turning point in his recovery. Despite the challenges, Mark never gave up hope of returning home and regaining his independence. He diligently adhered to his care plan, showing remarkable determination. His admitting physician prescribed the appropriate antibiotics to address any remaining infections.

The physical therapy team employed a variety of rehabilitation tools and techniques to aid Mark's recovery. They worked closely with him to improve his general mobility and strength. With the use of parallel bars, gait trainers, and balance boards, Mark gradually learned to walk again. He practiced weight-bearing exercises and coordination drills to enhance his stability and confidence. The occupational therapy team assisted him with activities of daily living, teaching him adaptive strategies and using assistive devices to promote his independence.

Soon, Mark was able to perform transfers from his bed to a chair and from a chair to a walker. He progressed to walking short distances with the help of a prosthetic limb and a walker. Remarkably, with continued effort and the support of the therapy team, Mark achieved the milestone of walking over 100 feet with Contact Guard Assistance (CGA) Although losing a limb presented many new challenges, Mark's resilience and perseverance were unwavering. His dedication to his rehabilitation and his positive attitude were instrumental in his progress, bringing him closer to his goal of returning to his normal life. Passing all goals set in his care plan, Mark was discharged to a lower level care to continue his rehabilitation.
