Kevin's Success Story
From Kindred Hospital San Antonio Central
Kevin, a full-time barber, suddenly experienced severe chest pain and had to be admitted to a local hospital in San Antonio. Upon his admission, he was diagnosed with sepsis and pneumonia. During his stay at the hospital, his condition worsened, and he had to be placed on a ventilator as he was battling both sepsis and pneumonia. Kevin spent several weeks in the hospital; however, the medical team made a critical decision for Kevin's health recovery by transferring him to Kindred Hospital San Antonio Central for advanced medical care that included ventilator weaning and IV antibiotic treatment.
Prior to his admission to Kindred, the interdisciplinary team studied Kevin's medical condition and crafted a specialized care plan tailored to his needs. Upon his arrival, the team quickly sprang into action, utilizing the care plan as the primary roadmap for his recovery. His admitting physician administered a course of appropriate antibiotics to battle his sepsis and pneumonia, including a combination of broad-spectrum and targeted antibiotics to effectively eradicate the infections. Regular blood cultures and sensitivity tests were conducted to ensure the efficacy of the antibiotics and to adjust the treatment as needed.
Over the course of his stay, the medical team was successful in curing his sepsis and pneumonia, which significantly contributed to his future recovery. Once Kevin was sepsis-free and pneumonia-free, he began to build strength both physically and mentally. The pulmonologist and respiratory therapy team implemented specialized breathing techniques and exercises to strengthen his lung performance and capability. This included techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, incentive spirometry, and gradually increasing the duration of spontaneous breathing trials. With these methods, Kevin was successfully weaned off the ventilator.
Motivated by his goal of returning home, Kevin quickly applied himself to the rigorous physical and occupational therapy sessions. His physical therapy focused on rebuilding muscle strength, improving cardiovascular endurance, and enhancing overall mobility while his occupational therapy sessions aimed at restoring his ability to perform daily activities, such as grooming, dressing, and other tasks essential for independent living.
With success over success and passing all goals set in his care plan, Kevin was able to discharge home to his family. From the entire staff at Kindred, we wish Kevin all the success in his recovery.
Care for Complex Conditions
Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
