Jose's Success Story

Happy patient in wheelchair with caregivers

"I’m happy with my improvements but determined to keep working on my rehab after I’m discharged.”
- Jose

Jose, a Gardener and Landscaper, was transferred to Kindred Hospital Riverside from a short-term acute care hospital (STACH) after being diagnosed with Osteomyelitis of the Lumbar spine and C2-C3 Abscess. When he arrived, Jose could barely move in bed and was unable to transfer without the minimum assistance of two team members. He also required significant assistance for self-care tasks.

Motivated to get better, Jose worked with our physical and occupational therapy teams and has regained most of his function back, except walking due to the severity of his medical condition and required follow-up on his knee. With therapy, he can now independently move in and out of bed and manage a manual wheelchair to propel himself on even and uneven surfaces. He has also gained more independence with self-care tasks, such as dressing, bathing and grooming.

Jose is very pleased with the improvements he has attained and expressed determination that he will move forward with his rehabilitation after being discharged from Kindred Riverside so he can walk on his own again. His son also expressed gratitude for all the care his father received while in our care.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
