Jeffrey's Success Story
"There is nothing like family!”
- Jeffrey
Jeffrey, 56, went to the ER after being found unresponsive. According to the EMS record, Jeffrey was not heard from for at least twelve hours. He was lying down on the ground with a bottle of Pepto Bismol spilled next to him. The EMTs tried to intubate him but were not successful. He was subsequently intubated in the ER. A CT scan showed pneumonia, with possible aspiration. He was hypothermic, with a significant case of encephalopathy, because there were several failed extubations.
Jeffrey underwent a tracheostomy placement which allowed him to be medically stable and ready for transfer to Kindred Indianapolis North Hospital (Kindred North) for long-term care regarding acute and chronic illnesses. Upon arriving at Kindred North, Jeffrey was encouraged to participate in therapy services as best as possible. While working very hard along with the rehab and respiratory teams, he was able to tolerate trach capping on room air. Decannulation took place, along with being weaned off tube feeds and placed on a soft diet with thin liquids. Mobility and strength were then restored to normal.
Jeffrey returned home with his twin brother and sister-in-law and is reported to be doing great. He says, “There is nothing like family!”
Care for Complex Conditions
Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
