James' Success Story

Happy patient leaving hospital with caregivers

From Kindred Hospital Albuquerque

James, a dedicated and passionate bicyclist, found solace in his daily rides. However, one fateful day, he lost control and collided with a light pole. The impact left him with multiple fractures, rendering him immobile. James was swiftly transported to the local emergency room, where he was diagnosed with a spinal cord injury. His condition was dire as he endured a series of setbacks, but his unwavering hope in his recovery never wavered.

Once his condition stabilized, the decision was made to transfer James to Kindred Hospital Albuquerque, for its specialized medical care and rehabilitation services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and advanced wound care. Upon his arrival, James underwent a thorough evaluation, and a personalized care plan was devised, with the primary objective of liberating him from the ventilator, a milestone that would greatly enhance his overall recovery.

At Kindred, James faced initial challenges while trying to wean off the ventilator. He embarked on an arduous journey alongside the respiratory team, diligently employing various breathing techniques. The hard work paid off, and by the tenth day, James was free from the ventilator's confines. In addition to this, his external wounds received meticulous care and attention from the wound care team, and their efforts bore fruit before his eventual discharge. James had become entirely reliant on the care team for his activities of daily living due to the loss of functionality in his lower extremities. With his strength dwindling after an extended period of bed rest, James embarked on a rigorous regimen to regain his mobility, making use of adaptive devices for self-care, including neuromuscular reeducation. Remarkably, within just four weeks of his admission, James made tremendous strides in his recovery. He mastered the art of transferring from his bed to a wheelchair, regaining his self-balancing abilities and achieving self-sufficiency in feeding and personal care.

With one success building upon another, James reached a point where he was deemed ready for discharge to a lower level of care. There, he continues his journey towards full independence, a testament to his resilience and the exceptional care provided by the team at Kindred Hospital Albuquerque.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
