Cirilo's Success Story
From Kindred Hospital Dallas Central
Cirilo was admitted to Kindred Hospital Dallas after being discharged from a local hospital in Dallas, TX. He required additional medical care, including ventilator weaning and extensive rehabilitation. A specialized care plan was crafted to address his medical conditions, with the primary goal of liberating him from the ventilator. Upon admission, Cirilo was on a ventilator through a tracheostomy, confused, aggressive, and bed bound. The multidisciplinary team, including Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), and the Pulmonology team, collaborated on his rehabilitation.
The pulmonologist played a critical role in Cirilo’s ventilator weaning process. Close monitoring and gradual reduction of ventilator support were employed to ensure his respiratory stability. As Cirilo's lung function improved, he was transitioned to shorter periods off the ventilator, until he could breathe independently for extended periods. Eventually, Cirilo was successfully decannulated, marking a significant milestone in his recovery. While the PT team initially focused on passive range-of-motion exercises to prevent joint stiffness and muscle atrophy. Cirilo gradually progressed to active exercises and standing with support, eventually walking independently using a walker, which improved his mobility and confidence.
The occupational therapy sessions helped Cirilo regain independence in daily activities. Therapists worked on fine motor skills, coordination, and upper body strength. Cirilo practiced self-care tasks such as dressing, grooming, and feeding, and became independent in these activities, enhancing his quality of life. His SLP team assisted Cirilo in regaining his ability to speak and eat. They conducted swallowing assessments and provided speech therapy to strengthen his vocal cords and improve breath control. Cirilo practiced articulation exercises, enabling him to speak clearly and confidently. Swallowing therapy helped him progress to a regular diet.
Passing all goals set in his care plan, Cirilo was discharged to a lower level care for additional rehab. From the entire team at Kindred, we wish him all the success in his recovery.
Care for Complex Conditions
Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
